A close relative of mine died recently, and in a sort of way that is one of the events that has inspired me to finally put up this blog.
Earnest Hemingway was said to have read the obituaries every day as he drank his morning coffee. A very stoic thing to do–meditate on your own death before you start your own day. I suppose it can help you realize that no matter how bad your day is, well, it actually wasn’t that bad.
Similarly, my Uncle Joe’s passing has made me realize if I am thinking about doing something, I should probably take some advice from Nike and just do it.
Though I did keep a blog while I was in the Peace Corps, I have also done a fair amount of unpublished writing in the past, including half a book and a number of short stories, mostly written during my time in the Peace Corps. I plan on exploring areas of writing not limited to, but definitely including: entrepreneurship, relationships, theater, travel, technology, and Chicago.
So why today? Well, yesterday was the staged reading for my original pilot, Lady Killers, which was put on at the Improv Olympic Theater. To be honest, it was one of the first works of mine that I’ve shared in such a public way. And to be honest, the reading exceeded my expectations, as well as the expectations of the crowd I think.
Anyhow, here goes nothing. Here’s to you, Uncle Joe.
